Ooguri studies quantum field theory, quantum gravity, and string theory. He explores mathematical structures in these theories and uses them to develop theoretical tools for solving fundamental questions in physics. His work in physics has also inspired progress in mathematics.

Since 2014, Ooguri has been the Director of the Walter Burke Institute for Theoretical Physics at the California Institute of Technology. He has also served as the Director (2018 - 2023) of the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe at the University of Tokyo and as the President (2016 - 2019) and the Chair of the Board of Trustees (2021 - 2024) of the Aspen Center for Physics.
